50s Wiring vs. 60s Wiring:
The difference between 50s and 60s wiring in this context comes down to how the tone and volume potentiometers are connected within the circuit. This difference in wiring results in distinct behaviors when you adjust the controls. Here's a breakdown:
50s Wiring:
-
Characteristics:
- When you roll back the volume, it maintains treble frequencies better. This can result in a smoother transition from clean to distorted tones.
- However, the tone and volume controls interact more. Adjusting the tone knob can also affect the volume, and vice versa.
- Many players consider this wiring to produce a more "vintage" or "organic" sound.
-
Common Use:
- Often favored by players who frequently use their volume knob to control the amount of distortion.
60s (Modern) Wiring:
-
Characteristics:
- The tone and volume controls are more independent. Adjusting one has less of an effect on the other.
- When you roll back the volume, there's a more noticeable loss of treble. This can result in a darker sound at lower volumes.
- This is the more common wiring found in modern Les Pauls.
-
Common Use:
- Often preferred by players who want more consistent tone control and less interaction between the volume and tone knobs.
In essence:
- 50s wiring prioritizes treble retention when rolling back the volume, but with more control interaction.
- 60s wiring prioritizes control independence, but with a greater loss of treble when rolling back the volume.
It's important to note that the "better" wiring is subjective and depends on the player's preferences and playing style.
