Fender Serial Number Lookup: Prefix Chart and Dating Guide

Fender has used more serial number systems than almost any other guitar maker. The good news: nearly every format since 1976 starts with a letter prefix that tells you the factory and decade at a glance. This guide covers every major era, US, Mexico, Japan and Custom Shop, with the charts to date your guitar.

Skip the charts. Paste your serial into the free Mbit serial number lookup and it identifies the era, factory and year for you, including Mexican and Japanese formats.

US Headstock Prefixes (1976 to Present)

In 1976 Fender moved the serial number to the headstock decal and introduced a letter-plus-year system. The letter marks the decade, the digit after it marks the year within that decade.

Prefix Era Example
S 1970s (S9 = 1979) S912345
E 1980s (E4 = 1984) E412345
N 1990s (N5 = 1995) N512345
Z 2000s (Z3 = 2003; DZ = American Deluxe) Z3123456
US 2010 to present, two-digit year (US16 = 2016) US16123456

One honest caveat: Fender applied decals in batches, so a serial can land a year either side of what the prefix suggests. Late-1979 guitars with E0 decals and early-1990 guitars with N9 decals both exist. The neck-heel date stamp settles it.

Vintage Eras (1950 to 1976)

Era System
1950–1954 No unified system; numbers on the bridge plate or neck plate, up to 4 digits
1954–1963 4–5 digit numbers stamped on the neck plate
1963–1965 “L series”: L plus five digits on the neck plate
1965–1976 Large “F” neck plate, six digits, roughly 100000s through 500000s

Vintage Fender serials only narrow production to a window of a year or two. Dating a pre-1976 instrument precisely means checking neck dates, potentiometer codes and hardware details together, which is exactly how appraisers do it.

Fender Mexico (Ensenada)

Prefix Era Year digits
MN 1990s One digit: MN8 = 1998
MZ 2000s One digit: MZ4 = 2004
MX 2010 to present Two digits: MX14 = 2014
MXS Player II, 2024 to present Two digits after MXS
MC / MI / MG / MO Various Mexico series Handled by the lookup tool

Fender Japan

Prefix Era
JV 1982–1984, the first Fender Japan vintage reissues (Fujigen factory)
SQ 1983–1984
A–Q letters 1984–2000, one letter plus six digits; each letter maps to a two-year window

“Made in Japan” versus “Crafted in Japan” on the decal also helps: MIJ generally marks Fujigen-era production, CIJ marks Dyna Gakki-era production from the late 1990s onward.

Custom Shop and Reissues

Custom Shop instruments from Corona, California use a CS prefix with the year in the next two digits. American Vintage Reissues introduced in 1982 use a V prefix; the V number alone does not encode the year, so reissues are dated by the neck stamp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the serial number on a Fender guitar?

Since 1976, on the headstock decal. Before that, on the neck plate, and on the earliest 1950s instruments on the bridge plate.

Can two Fenders share a serial number?

Yes. Decals and plates were applied in batches, so numbers overlap between years and occasionally repeat. Treat the serial as a production window and confirm with neck and body dates.

What does MX mean on a Fender serial?

Ensenada, Mexico production from 2010 onward. The two digits after MX are the year.

Does the serial tell me which model I have?

No. It encodes era, factory and year, not the model. The decal and hardware identify the model.
